Weekly Food Waste Collections Coming in 2026

Update from Cambridgeshire County Council

From March 2026, all households in Cambridgeshire will begin receiving weekly food waste collections as part of a national government initiative to reduce landfill and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Key rollout dates:

  • March 2026 – Fenland and Huntingdonshire

  • April 2026 – Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire

  • Mid-2026 – East Cambridgeshire

Households will be provided with new food waste caddies and, in some areas, separate bins for paper and cardboard. Dry recycling will continue to be collected in a single bin.

This change is part of a wider move to:

  • Reduce over 10 million tonnes of food waste annually in the UK

  • Cut 18+ million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions

  • Convert waste into energy for homes and businesses

Become a Food Waste Volunteer

Starting June 2025, a community project is launching with volunteers from all five district councils. Volunteers will help inform residents about the new services through doorstep conversations. Training and materials provided.
